The hood is great and is exactly what we were looking for. It is very slim, powerful and quiet. We were a little worried about the heat sensor coming on when we didn't want it to. It hasn't been a problem. It hasn't come on once during, normal cooking activities like warming water, cooking items with lids on, etc.On the other hand, Broans quality control (QC) is very bad as well as is their installation manual. We went through 3 hoods before we found one that was in acceptable condition.In the first hood, the stainless sheet metal wasn't folder correctly on one end and created an unfinished look. (the dimensions may have been off a tad as well)The second one had a dent in the top at eye level.The third was more or less fine.Returning 42 inch range hoods isn't fun and amazon was not as smooth as they typically are with these hood returns. They were nice and accommodating, but due to the price of the item paid shipping labels are not auto generated and you have to call amazon back with how much the shipping was to get reimbursed and it confuses the normal amazon system.The installation instructions are for the small model which means all the holes and screws in the 42 inch model are different and don't match the pictures. The cutout in back wasn't punched out which the manual didn't mention. All in all, you can figure it out, but it was not step by step and if you didn't actually think about what things were for and how the hood needed to work, it would have ended up not working by just following the instructions.5 stars for the hood and 1 star for the QC and instruction manual gives a 3 star average.

This product arrived damaged from the vendor and neither the vendor nor Amazon has moved to correct the problem. I am waiting to hear back from both. Meanwhile, I have incurred installation charges for the installer to show up and given that I am in the middle of a remodel, my job has stalled in the area in which the hood was to be installed. I am very surprised by the total lack of response by both Amazon and the vendor selling the product. I have purchased a number of items from Amazon over the years and not had a problem. This may be my last unless this gets resolved quickly.

I was initially dismayed by the comments about receiving damaged units since this is an online purchase.I decided to buy online since the Broan is a 2 week special order from my local retailer.My unit arrived undamaged. Upon close inspection, the Broan has a crease, by design, on top of the unit. There is another crease, by design, on the front of the unit.The Broan has a 14 inch by 3 1/4 inch adapter/damper for either vertical or horizontal discharge. My installer had to integrate into existing 13 inch kitchen exhaust ductwork for a vertical discharge. Starting at the Broan unit, each successive new piece of ductwork was fitted into the next piece of ductwork (all fabricated at the house) until all the new ductwork was integrated into the existing ductwork. My installer did an excellent job.The Broan is 5 inches tall, less tall than the unit it replaced, and 42 inch wide. There 3 light levels for the LED lights and 4 speeds for the exhaust.
